Why I Serve: Airman Follows Family Legacy of Service and Caring for Others
LANDSTUHL, Germany — In the Emergency Department at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, medical personnel must remain focused as they respond to patients who need urgent care. Among them is U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Ian Guarisco, a medic whose work is guided by a family tradition of military service and a lifelong interest in medicine.
Guarisco’s decision to serve was influenced by the example set by both of his grandfathers who served in the military, as well as a cousin currently serving in the Marine Corps.
“Both of my grandfathers served, and my cousin is currently in the Marine Corps. I have always looked up to the people who wear the uniform,” Guarisco said. “I wanted to follow in their footsteps, be part of something bigger than myself, and make a real difference."
While his grandfathers gave him a blueprint for military service, his interest in medicine began at home. His mother spent 20 years as an intensive care nurse, and his father works as an emergency medicine nurse practitioner. Growing up around health care professionals gave Guarisco an early appreciation for the work involved in caring for others.
“Seeing the difference, they made every day sparked my own curiosity,” Guarisco said. “I knew early on that medicine was the only path for me.”
The example set by his family also shaped his understanding of service, sacrifice, and the importance of supporting others.
Today, Guarisco applies those lessons in the LRMC Emergency Department. The medical center treats service members and other eligible patients from across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, presenting medical personnel with a wide range of cases and challenges.
For Guarisco, the work means helping patients through some of the most difficult moments.
“There is something incredibly meaningful about being there for people when they are sick and vulnerable,” Guarisco said. “Just being able to help them feel a little better is the most rewarding part of my job.”
He said his family is incredibly proud that I’ve found a way to combine our family's two greatest passions: serving the country and caring for others.
His dedication to patient care has also earned recognition from his colleagues.
Sgt. Jonathan Baczynski, a noncommissioned officer in LRMC’s Emergency Department, said Guarisco consistently demonstrates professionalism and technical skills.
"He is always on top of everything that needs to be done,” Baczynski said. "Anytime he works with an ill patient, he does it exceptionally well,” Baczynski said. “He is simply an outstanding technician and service member."
For Guarisco, military service and medicine are closely connected. The values he learned from his family continue to guide him as he cares for patients and supports the LRMC mission, carrying forward a legacy of service that began generations before him.
