Nationwide Strikes Bring Germany’s Public Transport to Standstill
The industrial action, organized by the Verdi trade union, brought buses, trams, and metro systems to a standstill beginning at 3 a.m. (0200 GMT) Monday, compounding difficulties for travelers already navigating treacherous icy roadways.
The German Automobile Club reported pronounced traffic congestion during peak morning hours, particularly within major urban centers, as numerous commuters departed significantly earlier than normal schedules.
Ride-hailing platform Freenow documented explosive growth in taxi service requests throughout the morning period, recording approximately 1.5 times typical Monday volume. Hamburg witnessed requests exceeding four times normal levels, while Munich experienced triple the standard demand and Berlin saw roughly 50 percent increased requests.
Verdi stated the labor actions pursue substantial workplace improvements for public transportation employees, encompassing reduced weekly working hours and shift durations, extended rest intervals, and increased compensation for nighttime and weekend assignments.
Harsh winter conditions intensified the transportation crisis. The German Weather Service issued warnings that freezing precipitation and hazardous road surfaces were impacting multiple regions. Extended winter weather patterns, featuring below-zero temperatures and snowfall accumulation, have already generated transit disruptions across several cities, including Berlin.
The coordinated strike represents one of Germany's most extensive public transportation work stoppages, affecting millions of daily commuters and highlighting ongoing tensions between transit authorities and workforce representatives over labor conditions.
